“I am enthralled with wood: the warmth of the colors, the feel of the myriad textures, even the smells (each wood has its own.)I find the turning and carving processes immediate and emotionally involving.”
A piece of wood comes to me: a gift, a find in the woods near my home, a deserted carcass by the side of the road. I consider: what do I want, what does the tree, the wood offer? Then the making begins. Chain sawing, turning, carving, adding other media. There are literally moments in each piece when it says this is the way to proceed and this is enough.
This is the moment when I know I’ve done what is right; please the wood and the vessel will please another person. They will feel that rightness, the connection with the wood, the beauty.
