I love hardware stores and lumberyards. I like knowing how things work and fit together, storing ideas and intriguing materials in my mind while wandering aisles after aisles of creative possibilities. Small wonder that this is also my approach to art media and painting foundations!
I enjoy the challenge of matching a subject to the media that best expresses what inspired me to paint it. Sometimes spending as much time building my painting foundation as with the actual painting process!
My favorite subjects are animal portraits, local Santa Cruz scenes and architecture, figures and landscapes. I often depict atypical perspectives in my paintings to give the viewer a different experience of the subject matter. An engaging composition, color scheme or lighting on a scene will spark my interest and off I go!
I use photo references mostly, but do some plein air and life drawing too. In doing commission work, I will request several photos and discuss size, color schemes, and what the client most wants to have portrayed about the subject. When possible, I also like to take my own photos for filling in compositional needs of the final painting.
Prints and cards of my work can be seen and purchased at the Art of Santa Cruz Gallery in the Capitola mall. Not all of the available art is currently pictured on their website (at the website, go to "shop collections", "home decor" to find my items). I do have photos of all items they have, and will keep an up to date group photo or two in the images on my Visual Arts Network page (including standard size format info.). If you have questions about a piece pictured on the Visual Arts Network page that is not available from the Art of Santa Cruz Gallery, please reach out to me and I will be happy to assist in anyway I can.
Appointments for a phone call, video call, or a studio visit can be made to view prints, an original work, discuss an alternative print size, your commission idea, or to have the art put onto another item – clothing, throw pillow, cup, mousepad, etc., as desired. Please email or call me to schedule a time. I look forward to meeting you!
