Dutch-American Hedwig M. Heerschop is a photographer, educator and printmaker who lives and works in Santa Cruz, California. She completed her Master of Fine Arts/Photography at San José State University, San José, California.
Hedwig works with alternative photographic processes including historic 19th century printing techniques, mixed media, and hand made books. She taught Alternative Processes in Photographic Media at San José State University and taught a two-week workshop in Cyanotype and GumBichromate printing techniques at Cabrillo College Summer Arts 2013. She assisted in workshops with Brian Taylor, Dan Estabrook, Holly Roberts, Dan Burkholder, Harold Davis and Steve Zmak.
Currently, Hedwig is combining her photography in exploring different printing techniques such as; etchings, (Intaglio), collographs, copperplate etching, and monoprints.
In 2012 Hedwig became a member of the Printmakers at the Tannery (PATT) in Santa Cruz, CA and a member at MPC Printmakers in Monterey, CA. She studied under Jane Gregorius, Robynn Smith and Denise Sanders and explored many different possibilities in printing techniques and chose the monoprint to execute her series, The Windmill and the Turbine, which is a visual narrative between the traditional windmill and the modern wind turbine. The series, Barns in Pennsylvania, and the series, Amsterdam are both printed with the photo-polymer technique (etching).
She curated a national exhibit, Photo Alchemy, at Pajaro Valley Arts (PVA) and produced an accompanying catalog. For the last several years she is curating Sculpture IS: In the Garden at Sierra Azul Nursery & Gardens, Watsonville, CA.
Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions, including Breaking Boundaries, in Pingyao, China and Made in Holland in Naarden, The Netherlands. Hedwig's photographs and prints are collected in many private collections in the USA and Europe.
Currently Hedwig divides her time working as Exhibit Coordinator at Pajaro Valley Arts in Watsonville, CA., and as a printmaker/photographer at her studios in Aptos and Santa Cruz, California.
