Using My Head

My mom moved to Santa Cruz in 2005. She did this to make my life easier and to lessen my flights down to San Diego to help her through her various health issues. I was a bit nervous about her move here. No need for that as she turned out to be THE BEST MOM EVER. She arrived and fell madly in love with Santa Cruz. Her neighbors in the apartment complex called her “the lady that goes out every day”. At 83 she hit the town in a full gallop, made amazing friends and never complained about leaving all behind. When she downsized from a 3 bedroom home to a small apartment, one thing she gave me were all of the letters I had ever written to her (only child) and all of my childhood pictures. I painted one large canvas using my 2nd grade class photo as the subject for a piece in the Art Party in San Jose. My mom said it was the best painting I had ever done. So… to please her, I painted another. She said it was the best painting I had ever done. I ran out of pictures so I began to attach my head to various old photos. They were all the best painting I had ever done. I began to really like painting real people into my pieces.  Another bonus was whenever I used a friend’s face in a piece I felt compelled to give it to them. Using my head fixed that also. My mom died in 2016 but I am still using my head. I am pretty sure they are the best paintings I have ever done.
