Artist Statement

While walking on the beach or working in my garden I’m always finding shapes and patterns that I want to work with. I’ll take a photo or do a quick contour drawing of something that's caught my interest. Next I trace my drawing on to paper, using some of the handmade papers I’ve collected. I then cut and paste the paper shapes on to boards. I think of my technique as painting with paper, which is typical of collage. I don't limit myself exclusively to the collage process, and I add other materials to my work, which puts it in the category of Mixed Media. Geometric divisions are something I consistently use, and in some pieces I’ve used quilt patterns. Like quilters, color, shapes, patterns, balance, and repetition are important in my work.
