Winning the Halloween poster contest in fifth grade at Saint Lawrence the Martyr grammar school set me off. (Lesson: A little encouragement goes a long way!) Or maybe it was seeing a brilliantly done Rembrandt-like portrait at the county fair that made me think, “Wow! A modern human did that! I want to try that!” Or maybe it was my encouraging, terminally cool high school art teacher. Regardless, I’ve been at this a long time, starting with exploring the near-Gothic to now seeing what a pallet knife can do.
Is all art therapy? I don’t know, but if I couldn’t leave myself and this complicated planet by concentrating on something, I would lose it.
