The first time I was deeply moved by a piece of art was at the De Young Museum in San Francisco. I was a teenager taking a required art appreciation class. A carved wooden statue caught my eye. I was mesmerized by the peeling paint, revealing many layers of color. This memory inspires me to create interesting textures in my art. When I work in oil and cold wax, I love how I can carve back into it and expose the history of the painting.
