My goal is to create functional art that provides the user with a connection to our local environment. I am in constant awe of the natural beauty of California. During my many, "working hikes", I photograph ravens and other birds, insects, flowers, forest and seascapes to use as inspiration. Other influences include Art Deco, Art Nouveau, The Mimbres potters of the Southwest and various world wide ancient designs.
I use my handbuilt and wheel thrown pieces as canvases. Each piece is painted with colored slip then carved using wire loop tools exposing the white clay beneath. I love the feeling of carving through the soft clay and seeing my imagery emerge, giving life and narrative to the form.
I love that clay is a natural substance which can be formed and reformed and that the possibilities for creating are endless!
